Author talk video at Berkelouw Book Barn

Michelle Morgan - Tuesday, March 20, 2018

I recently had the privilege of taking part in the Author Talks video project of the Tom Keneally Centre and Sydney Mechanics School of Arts Library. While enjoying the peaceful ambience at Berkelouw Book Barn Bookshop & Café, I chatted about my novels for a five minute video that is now available on YouTube:

SMSA short videos for more than 50 Australian authors can now be viewed on YouTube.

Many thanks to the SMSA Library and the Tom Keneally Centre for this wonderful opportunity!

More reviews of FLYING THROUGH CLOUDS

Michelle Morgan - Thursday, March 08, 2018

It's exciting to discover new reviews of Flying through Clouds. Here are some quotes from recent reviews:

“Flying through Clouds is a compelling mix of humour and drama, with a resilient and likeable protagonist. This book is full of many interesting writing prompts and would be an asset for wide reading. It could be a useful text for cross- curricular study too.”  (mETAphor, Issue 1, 2018)

“This story is so well written and easy to follow, I would recommend this to fans of YA and is suitable for readers 12 years and up… A book that brought me happy tears, this is one of my 2017 favourites.”  (Read3r’z Re-Vu, 1 November 2017)

“Michelle Morgan creates realistic scenes, which gives her readers a window into the 1930s, where tuberculosis was rampant, planes had propellers and a few hours in the air might allow you to get your pilot license.”  (Kids’ Book Review, 27 August 2017)

Writing up a storm in Ubud

Michelle Morgan - Monday, October 30, 2017

I recently spent eight fabulous days in Ubud, Bali, immersed in playwriting, listening to other authors and experiencing the rich local culture.

I attended a five-day intensive Playwrights' Retreat with talented and multi-award winning playwrights, Tanika Gupta and Lachlan Philpott. The daily workshops included a variety of writing and drama exercises, discussion of play scenes and critical feedback from the playwrights and the other three participants (Di, Sunara and Tee) about the plays we are working on.

It was also a privilege to go to the first day of the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2017, with inspiring talks by national treasures, Nh. Dini and Marina Mahathir; exploration of incredible journeys with Paula Constant, Per Andersson and Rob Henry; hilarious discussion of the pleasures of leisure with Robert Dessaix; and powerful performances by storytellers, Arielle Cottingham, Sholeh Wolpe and Brigitte Schar. I also gave a copy of Flying through Clouds to Rissa, a visiting writer and teacher from a village outside Jakarta.

I managed to squeeze in some sightseeing at the World Heritage Rice Terraces and Water Temple (Tirtha Empul) and spent hours browsing through the amazing artworks at Neka Art Museum and Puri Lukisan Museum. I stayed at the lovely Kajane Mua Villas and enjoyed delicious local dishes at several cafes and restaurants in Ubud. A sensational working holiday!
